Turning points

The client’s “DS The Story” file records five events that shaped Divya’s life and riding. The accounts below retain the injuries and longer term effects described in that file.

1993

Bharatanatyam Dance Event

The injury happened when she was running, fell on a rock, and fractured her forearm.

Injury recorded
Forearm fracture (right hand)
Effects described
Began using the left hand for writing, gradually became ambidextrous.
2011

KTM 125 Duke

In September 2011, Divya and her new biker friend were returning from Leh. They stopped at a cliff point for a photo when a small truck struck both motorcycles. Divya was standing nearby and fainted as she saw her friend fall with the motorcycle and truck into the hills. She regained consciousness at midnight in Manali Hospital, still searching for her friend. Two days later, the body was found. This tragic loss left deep emotional scars, shaping her resilience and her determination to ride with even greater purpose.

Injury recorded
Minor injuries but trauma
Effects described
Rode more frequently to erase the mental image of the accident, building resilience through practice.
2015

Honda Activa

In 2015, I was working as an unofficial cluster manager for Ritu Kumar. April evening, after my shift ended around eight o’clock, I left Ambience Mall in Gurugram. I had my colleague riding pillion with me, and she was carrying a ladies’ purse. Suddenly, three boys on a motorcycle rode up behind us and snatched her bag. Instinctively, I grabbed the bag back. When the buckle broke, I lost my balance and fell onto the debris that remained from a recently removed toll plaza. The road was littered with stones and iron rods that went into my body, causing multiple fractures.

Injury recorded
14 fractures on right side, 43% memory loss, head injury with 2-inch hole, facial scars, lower jaw shifted left
Effects described
Endured 8 years of depression, reduced flexibility, emotional struggles, loss of friendships, broken engagement, night panic attacks, mood swings, chronic head pain, disturbing dreams, hallucinations of dead people, temporary inability to read and write. This period reshaped your outlook on life and deepened your empathy for others in pain.
2019

Road Crossing

In 2019, I was training for the Sarjoba Rally, an event I’d decided to participate in after being inspired. One evening around 5:30 PM, I was crossing the road on foot during a training run. Suddenly, from the left side, a battery rickshaw driver saw me but didn’t slow down; instead, he sped up. He hit me hard on my left side. I fell, landing first on my tailbone and then rolling onto my right side. At that moment, a car screeched to a stop right in front of my face. I could hear the handbrake pulling and smell the rubber burning. If the driver hadn’t stopped, he might have run over me, and the injuries could have been far worse or even fatal.

Injury recorded
Tailbone fracture
Effects described
Could not sit on a chair or motorcycle for long periods, forcing lifestyle adjustments and testing patience.
2025

Cab (back seat)

2025: The Golden Triangle Ride & Chandigarh Accident

In March 2025, I set out on another ride with my Tiger 660, heading toward the Golden Triangle route. Midway, I faced an issue with my bike’s radiator, so I left the motorcycle at the service centre and decided to continue my journey by cab. I planned to attend an event at the Triumph showroom in Chandigarh first, then head home. I was seated in the back seat of the cab when, at a four-way intersection, our vehicle had a head‑on collision with another car. The impact was severe, and I ended up with a fracture in my left leg. Later, doctors had to fix it with a metal plate and screws.

Injury recorded
2 new fractures, left knee and tibia
Effects described
All injuries combined cause pain when the weather changes, trigger major mood swings, and heighten anxiety levels. Off‑road riding has become dangerous for Divya, as vibrations from uneven terrain intensify pain in her body and especially her left leg. These setbacks limit certain riding experiences, but they also highlight her extraordinary resilience in continuing to ride and inspire others despite physical challenges.
